THEBIGEAR
THEBIGEAR is a project coordinated by Francesco Michi
We intend to build an imaginary soundscape, imagining to have such a powerful ear that can perceive sounds coming from an endless acoustic horizon (click on "the project" for more).
Everyone can participate to the project… we are only asking you to describe the sounds you are hearing in this very moment exactly where you are… sounds in the room where you and your computer are, coming from the other rooms of your house, or from the outside, from the city or the countryside (to send your contribution click on "to participate").

AN IMAGINARY SOUNDSCAPE

there is an ambient hum of the machines disks and fans, low but definite, always there. Outside I can hear sounds of the traffic on the South Circular a 20 metres away from my first floor window, trucks using their airbrakes as they slow to stop before the pedestrian crossing which squeels and bleeps when its ready to be crossed. An Kango hammer is being used by the builders on Lucas St, it phases around the windows as the guy pushes into the concrete with urgent rising pulses then stops to survey his work. Outside the bookmakers downstairs I can just hear a slow conversation between the men who come outside to smoke and drink cans of cheap lager, I cant understand what they are saying but I rarely do (there are 40 first tongues in Deptford). A cockney voice on a mobile stands out (the cocktail party effect !), 'yea right....depends where you are' he says before going round the corner and into the sounds of the traffic. As the kango hammer on Lucas St stops I can just hear the shoolchildren playing and laughing at the school as they have lunchbreak, they are drowned out by the bass of a phat car stereo as a boy racer parks up before going into the island barber shop across the road, its a dancehall tune sound like 'Elephant Man' but I cant be sure.
