It's a quiet Sunday afternoon. My dog is sleeping unter my desk and dreaming, apparently about something exciting. He snarls, very lightly, sighs, also very lightly, belches, once in a while he lets out a rather loud sound that resembles a squeaky door, then sighs again. Now he has become silent, the dream must be over.

How much can we grasp of the communicative potential of the sounds produced by non-human species?
